Review

I first watched Wild Zero back in 2003 a couple of months after it had been released that August and near the time when I was really beginning to delve into the wonders that are Asian cinema. At the time I did not quite realise the extent to which Wild Zero reached, all I knew was that it involved Zombies, Rock'n'roll and some hawt Japanese guys that went by the names of Guitar wolf, Bass wolf and Drum wolf [RIP Billy] who are infact [I later learned] a propa Japanese band who not long before had actually played in my home town of London [how I curse the fate that made me miss that one!] in Highbury's Garage.

Now, as far as Zombie movies go [for which I am a fan] this particular movie fits nicely into the Evil dead, Biozombie rule. Zombies and giggles and any film [in my book] that manages to combine Japanese's greatest Jet Rock'n'roll band, transvestites, transexual managers and zombies into one film deserves mad props.

Wild Zero hurtles onto your screen at 150mph and doesn't stop! From the scenes where Guitar wolf play live screeching "Roaring blood! Roaring blood!" amid guitars turned up to "deafen" to Transvestite baddies, Aliens and the loveable Rockabilly Ace saving the world it doesn't stop and this is in a good way. The whole ethos of the film amid chants of "Roooock'nnn'Rooollllll" is [to hijack a PWEI song] get the girl [well, okay girl/boy] kill the baddies and save the entire planet whilst sticking together, playing Rock'n'Roll and looking hawt in leather pants. Not many bands could pull this off without looking pretenious and self important, [I can't imagine any country other than Japan pulling this off actually] It's a delightfulness of tongue in cheek joy!

Everything about this film screams FUN! yet it has enough substance to warrant more than one viewing. Although the music of Guitar Wolf [go check out Jet generation now!] wont be to everyones tastes it wont mar your enjoyment of the film. In actual fact GW's sounds is more, how shall I say it, enthusiasm over actual technical ability [volume also plays a huge part they have notoriously broken many amps and speakers in live shows] but that's their charm and whilst watching their cute leathered butts help Rockabilly sweetheart, Ace save the world, their enthusiasms infects you somehow. You actually care about the lead parts and you start to bond with the main characters and that, ladies and gentelmen, is what a film is all about.

5 out of 5
I would suggest this film to anyone who enjoyed Biozombie, Stacy, Evil Dead and Living Dead.
