Synopsis

In his feature length directorial debut, Won crafts a gruesome tale centering on two sisters and the demonic wig that comes between them. Each sister, it seems, has suffered a terrible trauma: Chi Hyon can no longer speak due to a terrible car accident that damaged her vocal chords, while her younger sibling Su Hyon has been diagnosed with cancer with little chance for recovery. For most of their lives, the two young women have nurtured a loving sisterly relationship, one that has only grown stronger in the face of adversity, that is - until one fateful day.

Review

Here's another good example of either Genius or Stupidity… A movie about a living… killer…wig. I wonder how they came up with the idea… like I said it's either a stupid proposition that got seriously solid, or the guy really had this all planned in advance and was a pure genius making it and keeping it a serious subject.

The story's about a young woman who, after her cancer treatments, loses all her hair. Her sister (who is mute after a freak car accident) gives her a Wig so she could smile again (since she was quite depressed). At first she refuses to wear the wig, but the second she tries it on, she is completely changed, and feels as if she has a different look… but not only her look, but her attitude also changes completely. She becomes independent, cruel, violent, not only that but she also seems to age quicker but also her terminal situation with her cancer seems to be healing suddenly but also she no longer want to remove the wig at all.

I cannot tell more about the movie because I really don't want to spoil anything. But I can say I really loved that movie. I am quite surprised about the movie because of the silliness of the subject. But what that Won Shin-Yeon director did with it is impressive. This movie marks Won Shin-Yeon debut in the movie industry, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to see this movie, I'm the kind of guy who loves K-horror, and will encourage new directors in this domain. And what a debut he made. The movie isn’t particularly scary… actually am a bit disappointed in this BUT the movie is intensely captivating, I really couldn’t look away for even a second. It's very rare that a movie hook me up so fast for so long without disappointing me. Sure it could've been scarier in my opinion, but the suspense, the ambiance, the way the movie draws you more into the characters and mysteries… it's just awesome. The fact that the main actress is mute really plays a big part in the thrills that this movie provides… since she's mute, for example she cannot ask "Who's there!" creeping in the shadows… she actually have to go there and face that… thing… or she cannot scream for help at all… this adds to the Thrill factor this movie provides.

Other than the great immersive sensation this movie provides, I really liked the fact that it's almost unpredictable in every situations. Most movies tends to lack originality and are always quite predictable, yet this movie, I don't know if it's because no one already made a serious movie with such a silly subject, but I couldn’t predict most of the movie. Sure one or two events were predictable, but the overall of the movie, you'll never know what's going to happen. That alone is an achievement in my opinion.

The pace is quite slow but steadily going uphill to the final climax which I think was great BUT a bit too fast at the end. I think the director wanted us to be so surprised at the end of the movie regarding the climax that he felt we needed to understand everything in fewer than 2min, we get everything explained, why is the wig alive, why is it evil, why she was chosen by the wig, etc… Every pieces of the puzzle come together quite nicely, but a bit too fast in my opinion. I didn’t really have the time for reaction during that climax. Kind of felt overwhelmed by the revelations at the end, but then the pace continued normally and everything puzzled back very fine until the credits kicks in. I wasn’t disappointed one bit in the pacing of the movie, although slow, it was quite captivating and interesting all along.

Great movie, decent acting, very immersive, unpredictable, nicely paced… this movie is my first favorite horror movie of 2005.

4½ out of 5
(Minus ½ just because it wasn’t that much scary, although very worth watching as a horror movie)
