The titles on this page are ones that we consider to be essential viewing for anyone interested in Asian films! I'm sure we missed some so please feel free to submit your suggestions!

Keep checking back for updates as we discover more Asian film gems!

9 Souls

9 Souls

Directed by Toshiaki Toyoda (Blue Spring) this is the story of 9 prisoners and their escape from custody.

This is another one of those Asian films where you really can't hate any of the characters no matter how bad their previous crimes, we see their human sides, we laugh with them , we feel sorry for them when things go wrong.

This is a future classic, probably will get the hollywood treatment! A must see movie for not just fans of Asian cinema, but really for anyone!

Afterlife

Afterlife

Written and Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda Afterlife is an amazing piece of Cinema.

The recently dead find themselves at a way station between Heaven and Earth and are told they have 3 days to choose the 1 memory that they will take with them into eternity.

Lots of the film takes the form of interviews and lots of the interviewees are not actors but ordinary people reminiscing about their own lives. A really wonderful film!

Azumi

Azumi

Directed by Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus) this is the tale of Azumi, raised with 9 other orphans to be an Assassin

This film has it all, incredible direction as you would expect from Kitamura!

Amazing action scenes, plenty of killing with swords (always a pleasure) and excellent acting ...superb!

Ryuhei Kitamura doesn't make bad films, like Miike you really can't go wrong!

Bangkok Dangerous

Bangkok Dangerous

Directed by the Pang Brothers (The Eye) is the story of a deaf mute hitman!

Excellent film about a mans discovery of himself, he falls in love and comes to realise his job is perhaps not the best! We are treated to flashback events that lead to this point in his life and realise in typical Asian film style that he's a genuinely nice guy who's a victim of circumstance!

Likable characters, great direction and a good plot make this a highly recommended film!

Battle Royale

Battle Royale

Directed by Kinji Fukasaku this film needs no introduction, though we had to list it here as it's such a Classic.

A class of students is forcibly taken every year to an island, they're given 3 days to kill each other so only 1 is left or they all die by having their heads blown off by the bomb that's been strapped to each students neck.

This is a violent film but is also a great film about people and their reactions to extreme situations!

Excellent plot and script, great direction and Takeshi Kitano as the teacher ...what more could you ask for?

The Bird People in China

The Bird People in China

Directed by Takashi Miike this is a very meandering film, slow paced but absolutely superb!

An unmissable film with great characters and a great story.

Beautifully filmed in some of the most incredible settings you will see, every frame is a joy.

You can't go far wrong with any Takashi Miike film but this in our opinion is one of his best

Drive

Drive

Directed by Hiroyuki Tanaka (Sabu) this Crime/Comedy is about a salaryman with some deep seated psychological problems and what happens in 1 night when his life is suddenly intertwined with a bunch of bank robbers.

This is an incredible film, the characters make some life changing discoveries about themselves and each other!

It's a fast paced, funny film that I would recommend to anyone, again Sabu is a director that doesn't make bad films so you can't really go wrong with any you choose!

The Eye

The Eye

This Pang Brothers spooky horror is one that is going to get the hollywood treatment (unfortunately) do yourself a favour and make sure you watch this first!

Extremely atmospheric this is the story of Mun, a blind woman who gets a corneal transplant ...unfortunately from a young woman who had the ability to see things that perhaps you'd rather not be able to see!

Some great spooky moments, if you liked Ringu then you should certainly try this out!

Asian horrors are the best!

Hard Boiled

Hard Boiled is pure HK action, this is what made John Woo & Chow Yun Fat famous!

Pointless Slow Motion, lots of painful looking stunts and only reloading when it's cool! Nothing that could come out of Hollywood could come close tho this action packed extraveganza.

An absolute must see film

Watch it now!!!!

The Quiet Family

This excellent black comedy from South Korea is the film that inspired the much better known Happiness of the Katakuris by Miike Takashi.

This however is a better film than Miike's (Much as I do like Katakuris)

Excellent acting, casting and direction as well as a plot that keeps you gripped to the end.

An absolutely unmissable dark comedy that will make you laugh till you cry.

Ju-on The Grudge

Ring

Please don't watch the USA Remake before you've watched the original Japanese Ringu, it will destroy what is a classic horror film for you!

Sadako is a terrifying Ghost. Ringu is a superbly scary film! A Video Tape is discovered which after will cause the viewer to die 7 days after watching it....unless...

Great atmosphere and a class film that really didn;t need remaking! When will they learn??

Watch this with the lights out!!

Lone Wolf and Cub

Kozure Okami (Lone Wolf and Cub)

Lone Wolf and cub needs no introduction really! These original 6 films directed by Kenji Misumi are all deservedly in the recommended section!

Violent beyond belief and with more blood than you can shake a sword at, Ogami & Daigoro journey to avenge Daigoro's mothers death and restore the family name!

It's worth noting that UK releases are poor transfers and the 1st and 3rd parts are also cut! Worth making the effort to get the new Animego R1 releases!

Oldboy

Oldboy

From Chan Wook-Park, the Director of Sympathy for Mr Vengeance

Dae-su Oh is abducted from a street on a rainy night and imprisoned in a secure cell, mocked up to resemble a hotel room. Given no explanation, he spends the next fifteen years of his life locked in solitude!

“Oldboy” won the Grand Prix at Cannes this year, the most prestigious award of the festival!

A tale of revenge that will leave you thinking about it long after it's finished. Great directing, great acting and a good solid plot make this an unmissable film

Ong Bak

Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior

Directed by Pratchya Pinkaew and starring Phanom Yeerom this is an excellent Action film!

OK, so the plot of this film leaves a bit to be desired and makes little sense (though, to be honest, a film of this kind doesn't need much plot)

Superbly filmed with long stunt sequences we can expect great things from this films star!

This is a film that will leave you gasping for breath.... it's been a long time since we've seen action on this scale!!

Shaolin Soccer

Shaolin Soccer

Directed by Stephen Chow, This is a class comedy with great special effects.

I must say I'm not usually a big fan of Hong Kong comedy as it has a tendency to be too slapstick for my taste!

However there are always exceptions and Shaolin Soccer is just that, it's extremely funny and has some great martial arts. As well as some of the nicest CGI effects you'll see anywhere!

Great for all the family this is a must see film!

Survive Style 5+

Survive Style 5+

Directed by Gen Sekiguchi (Who previously had only directed commercials) this is an absolute mind blowingly original film.

You never know what is going to happen next as we follow 5 different seemingly unrelated stories.

Visually stunning with an amazing soundtrack, this is afast paced with a star studded cast (including Tadanobu Asano, Sonny Chiba and Vinnie Jones).

This is definitely one to watch!

Taegukgi

Taegukgi

Also known as Brotherhood this powerful story of two brothers fighting in the Korean War is absolutely amazing!

Showing all the brutality and futility of war this is the best of it's kind in many years! Well cast and brilliantly directed, realistic war scenes filmed at Daegwallyeong Ranch.

This is an unmissable film! Buy this film now, you really won't regret it!

Uzumaki

Uzumaki

Based on the Junji Ito manga and directed by Higuchinsky this is a stunning looking film.

Uzumaki (meaning Vortex/Spiral) are somehow haunting a town! Objects, people, even one girls hair!!

Everything about this film looks stunning, the director had previously only directed pop videos and you can definitely see this in his style.

Every time you watch this you see more Uzumaki in the background. This is a film like no other...weird!!
