Synopsis

This uncompromising new film centers on the trials and tribulations of one Murusaki Juzo, a mild-mannered youth who finds himself constantly harassed at school. It seems that a relentless gang of thugs led by Akai Toru take great pleasure in abusing poor Juzo on a daily basis, eventually leaving the young boy with permanent psychological scars. Ten years later, Juzo discovers that his former tormentor Akai now lives in the apartment directly above him, along with his faithful wife Nozomi and his little child. Things get even worse when Juzo makes another shocking discovery: not only do both he and Akai work at the same construction company, but Akai is his boss! Now, even as adults, the bullying resumes once more, this time in the workplace.

However, Juzo isn't going take things lying down.

Review

Murasaki is bullied as a kid and in his new job by his senior, (Akai), who lives in the flats above him. At work soon after he starts is when we get our first glimpse of the other side of Murasaki who’s got a split personality or it looks that way. Seki who he works with is about his only friend and happens to be in the same boat, bullied by Akai. You have an idea by now and know for sure he has a split personality when he stabs to death his neighbour in number 15 and then murders Seki.

Murasaki follows this up by befriending Akai’s wife without the knowledge of her husband gaining her trust of her over a period of time, he bug’s their apartment listening to their conversations learning what they are doing and what they discuss. He gives Akai’s wife some cinema tickets and looks after their child, Yuki, who he tries to kill, but ends up disembowelling an old gang member of Akai’s, he’s been tailing Murasaki.

When he doesn’t come back with child that night they visit his apartment and Akai discovers its Murasaki, realising he’s the kid he bullied when he was a younger. Akai returns to his old school hoping Murasaki will be there with his kid who he can save.

The ending is a bit strange but that’s what common with a lot off Japanese movies and makes them a little more intriguing making you think a little more. It’s very dark without actually showing too much gore/violence don’t get me wrong there is plenty of blood and guts but its not over the top. The picture quality is good along with the audio.

This one of the best Japanese films I’ve seen in the past year well I don’t recall another classic released in the past 12 months. It’s a fascinating watch and keeps you interested and wanting more from start to finish, the time flies at 115 mins.
