Review
I bought this movie off the internet, and only a week after did I go and check out what this movie was all about. I do this once in a while, order completely unknown movies... Sometimes they turn out to be quite jewels!
Anyway I wasnt expecting anything out of this Sci-Fi Movie about Soldiers been thrown back in time to try and change history. But really I was quite suprised; very entertaining, nice action, nice touch of comedy... this movie has it all! The story's about the Korean Gorvernment Surrendering their only Nuke bomb to the USA... for the sake of the world I guess. Now the North Korean General is totally pissed at this idea of letting go their only "High-tech" nuke; to him it's like surrendering completely to the next would-be invader. So the North Korean General turns renegade and steals the Nuke. A South Korean Commander is sent to find and eliminate that rogue general, as they find each other and engage in combat, a weird Comet passes over them, and somehow throws them back right in a middle of a fight between Villagers and Barbarians in the year 1572. Eventually they'll end up meeting a young man who will happen to become one of Korea's greatest generals in history (it is a real character that existed in the 16th century). And so the soldiers, both North and South Korea's, will make a truce in order to survive and get back to their time. This is how the movie starts off. (Really there arent any real spoilers in that) :-)
The movie can be a cross breed between Chiba's G.I. Samurai & USA made movie Timeline. "GI Samurai" because of the soldiers going back in time, and Timeline for the depth of the story and some similarities. Now although a bit... alot silly the idea of a Comet passing close to earth could send you back in time, is quite... well... VERY silly, the movie quickly makes us forget how they got there, and makes us concentrate on "What the hell will they be doing". The movie is very well constructed, I really got into the movie, and completely forgot how they got there up until they talked back on how they'll go back... which is again another really far fetched theory which seems just way too.... "Unprobable" comes to mind... But besides the how they came, and how they,ll go back... the movie really is a Great Sci-fi action flick with nice comedy touches. The action is quite present in this movie, and nicely done, either gun fights during the stand-off at the beggining, or later on the sword fights... all of those are very well done and quite suprising; both in style and being unexpected. The movie blends alot of small comedy doses which is very nicely done, nothing like "stupid" comedy, but really more like a good clean laugh. As for the actors, I don't have much to say about them, good actors, but in my opinion they were acting a bit too much or way out of proportion. The quarrels between both North and South Korea's soldiers are a bit overreacted and childish... building a fence made out of branches to separate the sleeping ground is quite childish for fully grown soldiers in my opinion. As for the environments they are very nice, quite beautiful, reminded me of the environments found in the movie House of Flying Daggers... so I dont need to add anything there.
Overall of the movie; if you can look pass the silliness of a mysterious comet with the power to send people back in time so that you could enjoy quite a good action movie, I'd say you need to give it a try!
Story: 4/5 (minus 1pts for the Comet Power thing)
Characters: 4/5 (too childish)
Entertainment: 5/5
4 out of 5
(minus 1 point for both reasons stated above)
