Review

As a child Shun Pei leaves Cheju for Osaka, Shun Pei’s played by Takeshi Kitano. You see Shun as a grown man who disappears before the war and surfaced shortly afterwards while is sons go to war, he wasn’t missed much being a violent alcoholic. Soon as he’s back he smashes up the house (owned by a landlord) and turns it into a fishcake factory.

His bastard son turns up, Takeshi, from a lady he raped and it seems that the kid, about 20 years, is as violent and aggressive as his old man, he’s shot dead 7 days later in another city. Shuns now doing better and he buys a house for his mistress, which he doesn’t keep a secret. You see him expand his business into loan sharking and by now you’ve seen how violent he can be. His wife opens up a diner not pleasing Shun one little bit. His mistress, Kiyoko, soon develops a brain tumor and 2 young family members are sent to jail. Things are not gong well and his drinking and abusive ways start again against his family, he gives his own daughter, Hanako, a hiding and she tries to commit suicide causing one of his son to confront him, Shun puts him in hospital.

Shun shuts his fish cake factory and throws himself into his loan sharking business, Kiyoko is released from hospital later that year into the care of Shun. He hires a lady to look after Kiyoko, so he moves her in and he starts sleeping with her. Kiyoko is fully disabled so Shun finally puts her out of her misery, his family know what he’s done but say nothing; they want his money.

Shuns original wife’s health is failing and he wont give any money for her treatment so Shinji beats him up this is the first and only time, he returns to Shinji house seeking revenge whilst his son is doing the same at his house on a much smaller scale. Shun now has another child, a boy, Hanako and his daughter finally commits suicide, her new husband who was just like her old man. Shun turns up at the funeral and starts fighting then collapses, when he returns home to his second wife he looks so much older and she’s stolen all of his money. You see Shun living out the rest of his life, still streetwise but it’s a sad existence and he even given away all his wealth to the people of North Korea.

Its long watch at just of 2 ½ half hrs but the time flies, kitano’s performance is what you would expect and nothing other than class. The all round acting is impressive with some famous actors from kitano’s previous films. The DVD is present with an extra disc, which isn’t subbed in English, but you can’t complain the actual set is very nice indeed and very collectable. This disc can be found at DDDHouse.com along with the single disc version.
